Where dogs walk
Lloyd Park, Walthamstow Marshes and the edge of Epping Forest

The street market along the high street is lively most days, with food stalls, crowds and plenty of dropped scraps. A dog that gets a strong leave-it on food and learns to ignore stalls is much easier to walk here. Begin practising at a quiet time, keep the lead short and reward every glance away from the ground.

Most homes are Victorian terraces and conversions, so dogs meet each other on narrow pavements and at the front gate. A calm sit and an easy turn away prevent a lot of tension. If your dog reacts to others across the road, increase the distance and reward calm noticing rather than waiting for the reaction.

Lloyd Park offers open space, and the marshes to the west are wilder, with long grass, water and paths shared with cyclists. Epping Forest begins not far away, and parts of it are grazed by cattle in summer, so a dog should be called away from animals and kept under close control. Read signs at the forest edge and carry a lead even when you plan to walk off it.

Rain turns the marsh and forest paths to mud, and the habit of wiping paws at the door is worth building from the start. Short winter days also mean many walks happen in the dark, so use a light or reflective gear on your dog. A recall that works in the dark is a very different test, so practise on a long line in familiar places.

How to get your plan moving.

  1. Write down what your dog finds hard, such as pavements, other dogs, visitors or being left.
  2. Ask each trainer you consider how they teach, whether they work in Walthamstow and what they do when a dog gets overwhelmed.
  3. Choose one cue to rehearse on your usual loop near Lloyd Park, Walthamstow Marshes and the edge of Epping Forest, and repeat it daily for two weeks.

Good questions

Before you begin.

How do I stop my dog eating scraps at the market?

Teach a firm leave-it and reward your dog for looking at you instead. Practise on a quiet day before you try a busy one.

Can I let my dog off the lead on the marshes?

Only if recall is reliable and the signs allow it. Cyclists, water and wildlife all make a long line sensible first.

Are there cattle in Epping Forest?

Parts of the forest are grazed in summer. Keep dogs under close control, keep your distance from livestock and follow local signs.
